Opentrons® OT-2 pipetting robot – affordable and flexible lab automation

The Opentrons OT-2 benchtop pipetting robot is a flexible system designed to automate life science workflows that involve liquid handling. The instrument is based on a modular platform.

Lab automation presents several challenges, and most solutions are either expensive and complex or easy to use but limited to specific workflows. The OT-2 robot fills this gap, allowing you to choose from a wide range of modules and pipettes.

The Opentrons OT-2 robot will:

  • Enable increased throughput
  • Reduce hands-on time
  • Improve consistency across samples and runs
  • Help optimize time-consuming protocols
  • Provide highly accurate results

The list of applications for the Opentrons OT-2 liquid handler is endless. Commonly used applications are:

  • Nucleic Acid Extraction
  • PCR
  • ELISA
  • MGS Library preparation
  • Reagent of sample aliquoting
  • Serial dilutions
  • Biochemical assays
  • Small-scale protein purification
  • LC-MS sample preparation

In addition, the OT-2 is compatible with ANSI/SLAS-compliant labware and automation-friendly consumables, so you can keep using your own labware.

Workstations

The OT-2 is a flexible and easy-to-implement system for many different types of laboratories. Choose from the list of pre-designed workstations covering the most popular applications, or build your own system with the on-deck hardware modules and swappable 1- and 8-channel pipettes.

Workstations include the OT-2 robot, modules, pipettes, and all necessary labware to accommodate your selected application. All workstations can be customized by adding or removing available hardware modules to suit your workflow. For more options and additional information, please get in touch with your local sales representative.

Available workstations are:

  • PCR workstation for PCR setup and thermocycling (max 96 samples)
  • Cell assay-based workstation
  • Pooling and normalization workstation
  • Dual flow chromatography protein purification workstation (max 96 samples)
  • Sample aliquoting workstation (max 96 samples)

Available on-deck hardware modules:

  • Temperature Module (GEN2)
  • HEPA Module (GEN1)
  • Magnetic Module (GEN2)
  • Heater-Shaker Module
  • Thermocycler Module
  • Pipettes

Software and protocols

The Opentrons app controls the robot and offers flexible options for creating individual protocols. The protocol software is adaptable to various workflows and does not require coding knowledge. Beginners can either create a protocol directly in the software or load established protocols from the library, while experienced programmers can use the open-source software Python API.

Opentrons

Opentrons believes that scientists should be able to focus on their science to accelerate discovery and innovation, and that access to automation is a key tool in achieving this goal. Their mission is to democratize access to laboratory robotics, providing the scientific community with a common platform to easily share protocols and reproduce each other’s results. There are currently ten times the number of scientists to lab robots in the world. Opentrons envisions a future in which that ratio will be flipped, and there will be ten times the number of lab robots to scientists. Headquartered in New York, Opentrons operate globally.
